How the SHRM-SCP is scored
The exam is criterion-referenced, not curved. SHRM sets the passing standard with the Modified Angoff method, a common approach in certification testing where subject-matter experts judge how a minimally qualified senior HR professional would perform. In SHRM's words, if everyone who tests meets the standard, everyone passes.
- Scaled scores run from 120 to 200. Everyone who passes receives the maximum reported score of 200.
- 24 questions are unscored field-test items, mixed in so you can't spot them.
- You get a preliminary pass/did not pass result at the test center. Official results arrive in your SHRM Certification Portal about two to three weeks later.
- Your score report includes a diagnostic chart for all six BASK areas, which is useful if you need to retake.
Since you're measured against a fixed standard rather than against other candidates, the 50% pass rate describes past test-takers. It doesn't set your odds.
Five reasons candidates fall short
SHRM doesn't publish reasons for failure, but the exam design points to a few predictable traps.
1. Choosing the wrong exam level
SHRM itself says about one in five testers selects the wrong exam for their knowledge and experience. The SCP expects strategic-level work, such as developing policy and aligning HR strategy with business goals. If your recent work has been mainly operational, compare your experience with the SCP eligibility rules carefully.
2. Studying knowledge, not judgment
Forty percent of items are situational judgment. Candidates who spend most of their time reading content often run into trouble on scenarios with several reasonable answers.
3. Answering at an operational level
Many SCP distractors describe competent execution. The best answer usually adds strategy, data, or stakeholder alignment.
4. Underweighting the smaller areas
Workplace is 13% and Interpersonal is 13.5% of the score. Skipping them gives away points that are relatively easy to earn with focused review.
5. Never rehearsing the full exam
Two 110-minute sections back to back test stamina. Fatigue shows up late in Section 2 if you haven't practiced at full length.

Pacing on exam day
You have 220 minutes of testing time for 134 questions, about 1 minute 38 seconds per question on average. Because the two sections are timed separately, pace each section on its own.
- Check the clock at the halfway mark of each section. You should be at roughly half the questions in that section.
- Don't get stuck. Pick your best answer, flag it, and move on. Knowledge items are usually faster, which banks time for scenarios.
- Use leftover minutes in Section 1 before moving on. They won't carry over, and you can't return to Section 1 later.
- Plan any break carefully. There's no scheduled break, and the clock keeps running if you leave the room.
If you don't pass the first time
You can't retest in the same window. You reapply for a future window as a new candidate and pay the full exam fee again. SHRM places no limit on the number of attempts.
Start with your Candidate Score and Feedback Report. It shows where you were above or below the standard in each BASK area, which tells you where to spend your next study cycle. A $100 results review is available, but SHRM notes that results rarely change and none have changed in the last eight years.

No. SHRM sets a fixed passing standard using the Modified Angoff method. You are measured against that standard, not against other candidates.
Scores are reported on a scale of 120 to 200. All candidates who pass receive the maximum reported score of 200.
Not in the same testing window. You must apply again for a future window and pay the full exam fee. There is no lifetime limit on attempts.
The two exams share a format, but the SCP is scored against the proficiency expected of senior, strategic HR professionals. Candidates who choose the wrong level or rely on operational reasoning often struggle.
