The short answer

  • Choose the SHRM-SCP if you want a competency-based exam heavy on scenarios, and you have three years of strategic HR work, with or without a degree.
  • Choose the SPHR if you prefer a shorter, knowledge-focused exam you can schedule year-round, and you meet HRCI's education-plus-experience matrix.
  • Both are widely recognized. Many job postings accept either, so check the roles you actually want.

Don't compare pass rates head to head

SHRM reports rates per testing window, while HRCI reports an annual figure. The candidate pools and eligibility rules also differ. A higher pass rate doesn't mean an easier exam for you.

How the two exams feel different

The biggest practical difference is the question style. The SHRM-SCP uses 54 situational judgment items per form. Each describes a realistic scenario and asks for the best of several reasonable actions. SHRM scores these against the answer a panel of experienced HR professionals judged most effective.

The SPHR is more knowledge-driven. You still apply concepts, but the emphasis falls on what you know about strategy, talent, total rewards, and employee relations rather than on picking among several defensible behaviors.

If you're strong on frameworks and law but find "best of four good answers" questions frustrating, the SPHR may feel more natural. If you rely on seasoned judgment and stakeholder instincts, the SHRM-SCP format tends to reward that.

What each certification really costs

For the SHRM-SCP, SHRM members pay $350 early-bird or $399 standard, and nonmembers pay $450 or $499. Every rate includes a nonrefundable $50 application fee. The early-bird period for the December 2026 window closed August 31, so standard pricing applies through December 24, 2026.

The SPHR costs $595 total with no membership discount on the exam itself.

In both cases, the exam fee is only part of the total. Add study materials, possible retake fees, and three years of recertification activities. See our SHRM-SCP cost breakdown for a fee calculator.

SHRM-SCP or SPHR?

Pick one answer per row. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere.

Should you get both?

Plenty of senior HR leaders hold both. The content overlaps a great deal, so studying for one helps with the other. If your employer pays for one credential, start with the one your market asks for most, then consider the second once you're certified and recertifying.

Frequently asked questions

They're hard in different ways. The SHRM-SCP leans on situational judgment, while the SPHR leans on knowledge. SHRM's most recent published SCP pass rate is 50%, and HRCI reports 76% for the SPHR, but the two figures are calculated differently and aren't directly comparable.

Both are widely recognized, and many postings list them interchangeably. Search job boards for your target title and location to see which appears more often.

No. SHRM requires at least three years of strategic-level HR or HR-related work, with at least 1,000 hours in each calendar year, or three years holding the SHRM-CP while working in or moving into a strategic role.

Not at the moment. SHRM states that the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP must be taken in person at an authorized Prometric testing center.

Both run on three-year recertification cycles. SHRM requires 60 professional development credits or a retest. HRCI requires 60 recertification credits with specific category requirements.
